The Centeno-Schultz Clinic Offers the Broadest Array of Non-Surgical, Advanced Stem Cell and Platelet Procedures for the Spine.

Do you have spine pain? What most people don’t know, is that the origin of spine pain is often misidentified. Our decade of experience in regenerative treatments for spine pain allows us to address as many factors as possible to gain insight into the true cause of the problem so that we can select the most appropriate treatment option available. Only then can the natural healing process be initiated using the safest, least invasive procedure possible

We offer a range of Regenexx procedures that we’ve developed to help patients avoid spine surgery. These treatments utilize the patient’s own natural growth factors or stem cells to treat bulging / herniated discs, degenerative conditions in the spine, and other back or neck conditions that cause pain.

What is a Spinal Fusion, and How is it Performed?

Colorado Stem Cell Therapy 604112 - Lower BackThere has been an explosion in low back and neck fusion surgeries in the past two decades, however fusion surgery should be your absolute last option. Research shows that fusions may be on the way out, as they’ve failed to show any clinical value.

The spine was built to bend, and as such it has 24 segments or levels that each moves a little. A spinal fusion surgery means that one of more levels of the spine are bolted together, usually with screws, plates or spacers, in the disc. Bone is often used to literally grow the discs together. The surgery is performed when the spine degenerates and the segments move too much. The idea behind a spinal fusion is that by bolting the spine levels solid, that won’t move anymore. But, does this really solve the problem?

Does Spinal Fusion Actually Work?

The short answer is: No. Given the incredible invasiveness of bolting the spine together and the huge cost of these surgeries and the fact that we know that ASD is real, you would think there was incredible evidence that the surgery works. Nope. This week marked the publication of the world’s first randomized controlled trial of lumbar fusion.

In this new study, almost 300 patients with low back spinal stenosis (arthritis that’s putting pressure on nerves) were randomly assigned to undergo either a traditional laminectomy or that surgery plus a lumbar fusion. The result was not surprising—adding a fusion surgery didn’t improve outcomes at two or five years after surgery!

Physicians are exposing patients to much higher surgical risk by adding a fusion and placing them at risk for breaking down the adjacent sites of the spine. Without any positive effect of adding the fusion, why are we doing this surgery?

Reasons to Avoid Spine Surgery

Given that the spine was designed to be in motion and still needs to move no matter what we do to parts of it, it’s easy to see that locking down any one or more levels just overloads the adjacent levels. In fact, the breakdown of these adjacent segments is so common after spinal fusion that there’s actually now something called “adjacent segment disease” (ASD). This means that because of the fusion, the next level or two up or down degenerates more rapidly due to the lack of motion in the fused area.

Why are Regenexx Procedures a Better Option?

Fusion surgery is a highly invasive procedure and is more likely to cause complications, which occur in 36% of fusion patients. 76% still required narcotics for pain and missed 3 times as much work as those who have had our treatments.

At the Centeno-Schultz Clinic, our processing allows us to custom tailor our regenerative mixtures for your condition and our patented two-tire processing results in 10 to 20 times more stem cells available for your treatment compared to other practices.

Our Regenexx procedures offer a variety of minimally invasive procedures that deliver ultra-precise spinal injections of platelet lysates or stem cells where needed, utilizing advanced image guidance.

After 2 back surgeries I could not enjoy the everyday activities that you should be able at the age of 36. Riding a bike, going up and down stairs, just going on a walk with my wife hurt. I was unable to stand and work for more than a couple hours. You get the idea… two days after my last injection I woke up with no pain. My wife and I went on a 5-mile bike ride and a 3-mile hike. I was in tears of joy. I could not have asked for better results. I my new life to you Dr. Pitts. Thank you so much!
