Rotator cuff injuries are one of the most common causes of shoulder pain in the United States. Shoulder surgery is particularly difficult due to the complexity of the joint, and post-surgical recovery can be painful, requiring a lengthy rehab period to restore strength and mobility to the shoulder.

Fortunately, patients that have a rotator cuff tear now have an alternative to shoulder surgery and the extensive recovery time. At the Centeno-Schultz Clinic, a patient’s own stem cells are utilized to repair the damaged muscle or ligament. The procedure involves a simple needle in, needle out treatment that does not expose the patient to risks of surgery or anesthesia. The stem cells are then placed under x-ray guidance into the area of damage, replacing the scalpel.

The rotator cuff is compromised of 4 major muscles and tendons that act collectively in order to stabilize the shoulder joint. The four muscles include the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis and teres minor.  Tendons are the fibrous portion of the muscle that anchors the muscle to bone.  This fibrous anchor can be inflamed resulting in a tendinitis or can be chronically degenerative resulting in tendinosis.

Reasons to Avoid Rotator Cuff Surgery

Pain after shoulder surgery is typically related to the operative procedure, and for some patients the shoulder pain unfortunately never improves despite the surgery. There are several reasons but the major one is that the shoulder was not the cause of the pain – this disconnect may explain why many patients still have pain following surgery. Also, with larger rotator cuff tears, there are high retear tears, with one study showing as high as 81%.

Why are Regenexx Procedures a Better Option?

At the Centeno-Schultz Clinic, our physicians utilize an ultrasound to determine exactly the source of pain. The pain may arise from a tear in one or more of the four rotator cuff muscles or inflammationof degenerative changes in the fibrous tendon anchor. The Regenexx procedure for rotator cuff tears is a patented same-day stem cell procedure. Through years of research and perfecting the use of stem cells and platelets to repair rotator cuff tears, Regenexx improves the rotator cuff’s regenerative potential, rather than further damaging an area that has given way because of tissue weakness.

Using a precise, image-guided injection of your own stem cells and growth factors, we are able to get more of the body’s natural “repairmen” directly into the tear.  By mobilizing your body’s own healing mechanisms and eliminating the trauma of surgery and atrophy caused by immobilization, Regenexx has produced good results in the treatment of partial rotator cuff tears and has even shown encouraging success with completely retracted tears.

I suffered a severe injury to my left shoulder as the result of a fall. My local orthopedist said my only option was arthroscopic surgery. I went to Dr Centeno FOR stem cell treatment instead. Great decision, great result. I highly recommend!

Dr Pitts & Centeno have helped myself & several family members & friends with various levels of regenerative medicine procedures. We are thankful to avoid invasive surgical procedures & get back to our active lifestyles. Most recently I took my 13 year old daughter in for her shoulder she injured playing volleyball, & Dr Pitts used his in-house diagnostic ultrasound machine to find a small tear in her supraspinatus muscle. With chiropractic therapies she showed improvement at her follow-up ultrasound visit with Dr Pitts a few weeks later. Thanks for finding the tear & your patience working with children.
