Life is short, seasons come and go, and qualifying events are often only once a year. Unfortunately, however, Injuries occur and can stand in the way of an athletes dreams. Surgery can be the end of a season or career.
SP is a case in point.
SP is a youthful, elite CrossFit athlete who presented in November of 2017 to the Centeno-Schultz Clinic with a two-month history of right shoulder pain that was intermittent, progressive in nature, and localized on the posterolateral aspect of her shoulder. The pain radiated into her triceps and forearm with accompanying tingling in her third, fourth, and fifth fingers. Her pain and weakness compromised her handstand push-ups, and she feared she would have to undergo shoulder surgery.
An MRI of her shoulder was significant for an injury to her rotator cuff. Specifically, she had a partial-thickness tear of her supraspinatus and infraspinatus rotator cuff muscles in her shoulder. Her neck X-ray was significant for loss of curve and multiple-level cervical (the neck segment of the spine) instability.
SP declined shoulder surgery for her rotator cuff and opted for ultrasound-guided injections of PRP.
We are grateful to have had the opportunity to assist SP with her national CrossFit dreams. Her caption in the featured image at the top of the page tells the story.
